All-O-Ruffles Shawl

Geschrieben von beyenburgerin - Mai 19, 2012

This shawl is part of a series of shawls. The shawl has ruffles all around, and the “O” stand for the many holes in the lace pattern. The ruffles are done directly as you knit along. The shawl looks nice from both sides, so it is reversible. Just one ball of sock yarn offers a size of 220 x 65 cm.

This shawl is part of a series of shawls. As this one has no ruffles, it is called N-O-Ruffles. And the “O” stand for the many holes in the lace pattern. The shawl looks nice from both sides, so it is reversible.

Happy Easter Shawl

Geschrieben von beyenburgerin - April 13, 2012

I only had planned to just knit a shawl. But several knitters asked me to write a pattern for this one.
It isn’t easy to find names, so I just called this one Happy Easter Shawl because I knitted it in the week before Easter.

Baltic Sea Breeze Shawl

Geschrieben von beyenburgerin - April 1, 2012

Here is the pattern of the Baltic Sea Breeze Shawl for you. The yarn is from  Ullcentrum (environmentally friendly yarn production), and thereby from Swedish sheep that had the Baltic Sea Breeze blowing around their nose and wool. It is very easy to knit, needs a thorough blocking and can be knitted as lage as you want it. Additionally it is wider than just a triangle, so it stays on the shoulders nicely and doesn’t slip down.

Errata of the lace pattern (download until 13th April, 2012):

row 5: k2, yo, k until center stitch, one yo each before and after center stitch, knit center stitch, k until 2 sts before the end of the row, yo, k2

Lottorp Shawl

Geschrieben von beyenburgerin - März 31, 2012

Here you can find the pattern for the Lottorp Shawl. I named it after the small city Löttorp on the island Öland in Sweden. The company Ullcentrum, where I got this wonderful wool from, is situated in Löttorp.  They produce environmentally friendly yarn since almost 15 years now and were the first to introduce this way of making a variegated yarn, because Ann Linderhjelm devoloped it. Here you can read interesting facts about the company. They also produce wonderful felted clothing, hot mats etc.

I like shawls that are a bit more than half a circle, so this one is a 5/8 th shawl that warms nicely and doesn’t slip from the shoulders.

Crepidula Shawl

Geschrieben von beyenburgerin - September 17, 2011

The Crepidula Shawl is an idea I had already quite a while. The wideness assures that the shawl lies on the shoulders safely and will not slip down. The shawl forms a three quarter circle, the edge is slightly ruffled. The pattern repeat is the same as with the Vest Crepidula. You can find that free pattern in my blog too.

This shawl is easy to knit, so it is also suitable for beginners. Advanced knitters can knit this shawl by the way. There are mainly stockinette and garter stitch rows and only 2 special pattern rows with yarn overs and increases within 16 rows. So don’t panic that you see so many rows described below. After a few rows you will not need to look at the pattern very often.

And here is the Download:    Crepidula Shawl (new upload September19th, 2011)

Flying North Shawl English

Geschrieben von beyenburgerin - Februar 24, 2011

Here is the pattern “Flying North Shawl”

I always wanted to design a spring shawl, so here is what finally emerged: Some sunrays at the centre top; below, birds high up in the sky flying north after a long winter, and on the bottom the first blossoms appear, lots of them. To finish, I added a nice and easy-to-knit lacy edging.

See The Light Shawl – English

Geschrieben von beyenburgerin - Februar 9, 2011

I designed this shawl, which I named the “See The Light Shawl”, in remembrance of my mother-in-law. She passed away peacefully on the 19th of December, 2010, at the age of 89.

Pattern: See The Light Shawl English

Additional See The Light Shawl Charts in Excel (equal square size)

Errata: Leave out Setup Row B and C

Errata Row 63: there should be two yarnovers instead of one on each side, so the outer k stiches in the middle should be yarnovers, leaving just k12 in the middle and then 2 yo on each side.

The shawl begins at the center top starting with my mother-in-law’s favourite knitting pattern, the Feather & Fan. From there open out rays, sun rays, and, further down, cornflowers. The edging comes in two versions. I started knitting this colourful shawl with the wool I spun on my handspindle during the week my mother-in-law made her way to the other side. The first is pink and green.  The second is cornflower blue. A cornflower is painted on her urn, and she would have picked that flower if she had seen it next to a path. In the photographs, the colours don’t resemble the way they really look in the light that is outside right now.

The pattern will be free, as all of my patterns, but I hope for donations for eye surgeries for people in developing countries. That is why I named the shawl  the “See The Light Shawl”. My mother-in-law had cataract surgery performed on both of her eyes, and she was happy to see colours again. On her 80th birthday, she asked for donations to pay for eye surgeries for other people so that they, too, could see the light and the colours again. To honor her we asked for the same instead of flowers for her funeral.

It costs only 30 € or $40 to do cataract surgery on an eye in Bangladesh. If some knitters who knit this shawl donate a small amount of money, many other people will see the light again. Click here to see how you can donate by credit card to “Christoffel Blindenmission”, CBM, which has already done more than 10,138,000 eye surgeries and on average does one every minute.

Remembrance Cowl English

Geschrieben von beyenburgerin - Dezember 16, 2010

This Cowl is very special to me. I spun its wool as I watched beside my mother’s deathbed. We were next to her and escorted her on the way to the other side as far as that is possible. The situation was not easy for our family, and so I took my spinning wheel with me. The magic spinning wheel seemed to soothe the whole room and everyone in it to open up their minds for the next step. The wool for this autumn-coloured cowl was already partly on the bobbin when my mother passed away peacefully on the 13th of November, 2010 at the age of 89, shortly after midnight. So I finished spinning the yarn and knit this cowl with it to wear at her funeral as a special piece of remembrance on that day.

My daughter modeled a bit, so here are new photos

Pattern: Remembrance Cowl English (revised pattern, uploaded 17th Dec,2011)

The cowl isn’t too close to the neck and doesn’t cause a “too tight” feeling. When only worn as a scarf, it completely covers the shoulders very nicely. When it gets cold, you can draw it upwards and cover your ears or your whole head with it.
As always, this pattern is free.

But if you wish to make a donation, please send it to: Rumaenienhilfe, account number 3401122, Bank code 33050000, BIC/SAWIFT Code WUPSDE330, IBAN DE04 3305 0000 0003 4011 22.

Pattern: Remembrance Cowl English (revised pattern, uploaded 17th Dec,2011)

If you prefer, you can send the money to me via PayPal and I will forward it to Rumaenienhilfe.
Rumaenienhilfe is run by the Catholic Church community in our village Wuppertal-Beyenburg here in Germany, and the money definitely goes completely to people who are in real need and need help. Donations from people who attended my mother’s funeral went there.
If you wish to make a donation, please add the code words: “Remenbrance Cowl”.

A Few More Words about My Mother
My mother finshed her PhD at the University of Vienna when she was 22 ½ years old. Her doctoral thesis was on the Banater Eisenwesen im 18. Jahrhundert (iron mining in the 18th century in Banat, which is a part of Rumania today), and because of this she always felt affiliated with that area.
Here are some more photos of the two Remembrance Cowls I have knit so far:

Here is a new Remembrance Cowl, knit from 4-ply sock wool. I added a hint how to use 4-ply sock wool is at the end of the pattern file.
