Edo Jacke Nr. 2 – Edo Jacket No. 2

Meine zweite Edo-Jacke ist fertig, Design Cheryl Oberle. Gestrickt aus selbstgefärbter selbstgesponnener kuscheliger Devon-Wolle vom Wollschaf. Etwa 400 g schwer und mit Nadelstärke 5 mm gestrickt. Die Farbe kommt auf dem zweiten Foto mit meinen neuesten Handspindeln von Texasjeans besser raus.

My second Edo Jacket is finished, design by Cheryl Oberle.  Knitted from selfdyed selfspun cozy Devon wool, bought at Wollschaf. About 400 grams and knitted with 5 mm needles. The colour looks better on the second photo with my latest spindles from Texasjeans.

Motorisiert – Motorized

Ich habe nach fast 1 1/2 Jahren Überlegung nun doch meine Kardiermaschine gewechselt. Mein Asthma zwingt mich zu feineren Wollen, außerdem habe ich mir ein paar sündhalft teure Woll-Leckerli in den USA (CVM und Cotswold) bestellt. Die wollte ich mit der alten Kardiermaschine nicht verhunzen, weil deren Belag nicht so fein war. Nun habe ich mir eine Rudi Raffzahn von Thomas Walther  gegönnt, und Göga hat den natürlich wieder motorisiert … seeeehr praktisch.

I thought about buying a new drum carder for about 1 172 years until I finally did it. My Asthma forces me to spin finer wools, plus I bought some very expensive wool from USA (CVM and Cotswold). I did not want to spoil that with the old drum carder, which did not have such fine carding cloth.  Now I bought a Rudi Raffzahn from Thomas Walther, and DH motorized it … veeeeeeery handy.

Und dann hat Göga mir noch mein Anna Spinnrad motorisiert. Und es ist hier mit dem großen Spinnflügel zu sehen, den Göga mir auch gebaut hat. Für das Zwirnen ist so ein elektroantrieb ganz schön praktisch.

DH motorized my Anna Spinning wheel as well. And here you can see it with the huge flyer that DH built me as well. For plying it is quite handy to have the wheel electrified.

Wolliges Tagebuch – Wooly Diary

Vor Weihnachten trudeln die letzten Geschenke ein.  Z.B. zwei wunderschöne Handspindeln von Enid Ashcroft. Eine türkische Spindel 13 Gramm schwer in gestockter Buche und eine Bienenkorb 28 Gramm in Pau Rosa und Sapele. Und damit die Spindeln nicht in Kisten und Kästen versauern, sondern man sie auch sieht, hat Göga einen Spindelbaum gebaut.

Before Christmas the last presents get here, eg two gorgeous spindles made by Enid Ashcroft. One Turkish spindle in spalted beech, 13 grams, and one beehive in Pau Rosa and Sapele, 28 grams. And to prevent the spindles from disappearing in boxes, DH built a spindle tree.

Und ein wenig Färben war auch noch angesagt. Schließlich war ich ja gerade so schön mit Chamäleon-Farben dran: oben 300 g BFL Multicolor, darunter 2 x Polarfuchs, unten 500 g Devon. Devon findet meiner Meinung nach nicht genügend Beachtung.  Auch diese Faser glänzt schön und kann locker mit Wensleydale mithalten.

And I went on to dye a bit, just had a run with that. 300 grams BFL humbug on top, 2 x 200 grams Polarfuchs (grey Icelandic) in the middle, 500 grams Devon at the bottom. In my opinion Devon wool is underrated, I think it is as good as Wensleydale.

Ich habe noch einen Remembrance Cowl gestrickt, eine meiner Anleitungen, diesmal aus 4-fach Sockenwolle und mit mehr Maschen. Die Farben passen so gut zu meiner Verdal-Jacke.

I knit another Remembrance Cowl, one of my patterns, this time from 4-ply sock yarn, which fit so nicely with the colours of my Verdal Jacket.

Und dann stand das Spinnrad auch nicht still. Beides Falkland Wolle von Helen Jacobs-Grant, oben die grüne Wolle 100 g und 320 m navajo-gezwirnt und unten die pinke 200 g und 350 m zweifädig. Die pinke erinnert mich an einen von meiner Mutter gestrickten Winterpullover, den ich vor etwa 45 Jahren oft getragen und heiß und innig geliebt habe. Darunter noch die letzten beidenWeihnachtsgeschenke für mich, die unsere Paketbotin gebracht hat, auch von Helen.

And the spinning wheel turned a bit too. Both Falkland wool from Helen Jacobs-Grant, the green wool on top 100 grams and 320 metres navajo plied, and below the pink one 100 grams and 350 metres 2-ply. The pink one reminds me of a winter sweater my mother knit for me 45 years ago. I loved that sweater so much. Below the last two Christmas presents for me that the postwoman brought, they coem from Helen too.

Und dann habe ich noch Lesestoff für die nächsten Tage bekommen. Meine letzte Spin Off ist in den Wirren von Hurrikan Irene irgendwo an der amerikanischen Ostküste verschwunden. Es wurde ein Ersatzheft geschickt, aber insgesamt dauerte die Lieferung etwas zweieinhalb Monate. Nun traf das Heft in einer normalen Lieferzeit ein.

And then I got a bit to read for the next days. My last Spin Off magazine disappeared in the confusion of hurricane Irene somewhere on the Eastern coast of the USA, and a replacement took a while, total delivery time was about two and a half months. This copy got here in a normal delivery time now.

Längenmessung Wollstrang – Measuring the Length of a Skein

Bis jetzt habe ich beim Haspeln immer die Runden gezählt und mit der Länge des Strangs multipliziert. Gestern befand mein hauseigener Erfinder, dass das doch zu mühsam ist und er mir einen Längenmesser bauen muss. Er meinte, dass sei so “unprofessionell” und”man könne das besser machen”. Das Messgerät ist ein Fahrradcomputer. Den kann man auf die Länge des Strangumfangs einstellen. Der Fahrradcomputer misst dann die Länge des Fadens. Wie beim Fahrrad gibt es einen Reed-Kontakt/Magnet, der den Impuls für eine Runde an den Computer übermittelt. Die Genauigkeit ist 10 m, aber auch da kann man sich dem Wert annähern. Wenn man zum Schluss noch so viele Runden dreht, wie 5 m sind und die Zahl springt nicht um, dann ist der Wert näher an den letzten 10 m. Springt der Wert um, so hatte man die Hälfte zwischen den 10 m überschritten.

Up to now I counted the rounds when I used a skein winder and multiplied the number of rounds with the length of the skein. Yesterday my domestic inventor stated that thiswas a job that was too hard and he had to invent and build me a device for measuring the length of a skein. Hmentioned that my way was unprofessionell” and ” you coould do that in a better way”. The measuring device is a bicycle computer. You can program the length of the skein. The computer then measures the length of the thread. As on a bicycle there is a Reed-contact/magnet that sends the information of a finished round to the computer. The accuracy is 10 metres, but you can get closer to the real value with a trick. When the wool has run out you turn the skein winder as many rounds as 5 metres are. If the number jumps to the next 10 metres, you are closer to that value, if no, you have about the value on the computer.

Wolliges Tagebuch – Wooly Diary

Im Moment stricke ich kaum, dafür habe ich eine intensive Spinnphase. Ich muss ja auch mein neues Spinnrad, Anna von Tom Walther, reichlich austesten.

At the moment I hardly knit, I do much more spinning instead. That is because I have to test my new spinning wheel, Anna by Tom Walther, intensively.

Das Spinnrad ist ein Reiserad und spinnt sich sehr gut. Ich habe zwei Wirtel und somit 5 Übersetzungen von 1:5,5 bis 1:15. Göga hat mir noch einen “Accelerator” gebaut, dadurch kommen 4 weitere Übersetzungen bis 1:28 dazu.

Anna is a journey wheel and very easy to spin. I have two whorls and therefor 5 ratios of 1:5.5 to 1:15. DH built an accelerator, so I have four more ratios in addition and up to 1.28.

Fertig gesponnen ist jetzt mein Drenther Heideschaf Vlies, es sind 1200 Meter und 490 Gramm.

Das erste Vlies Suffolk Lammwolle ist auch fertig gesponnen. Die Fasern sind recht kurz, etwa 4 cm im Durchschnitt. 1100 Meter Wolle sind das.

The first Suffolk lambswool fleece is spun. The fibres are pretty short, about 4 centimetres on average. This are 1100 metres of wool.

Die Wollsaison 2011 hat schon angefangen. Durch Zufall konnte ich an Vliese Gescheckter Bergschafe kommen.Die Galeriefotos auf dieser Internetseite sind besonders lohnenswert. Das zweite Foto zeigt den ersten Strang, den ich aus ungewaschener Wolle gesponnen habe.

The wool season 2011 has started already. I could get soem fleeces of Geschechtes Bergschaf by chance. The photos in the Gallery on this website are worth looking at. The second photo shows the strand I spun from unwashed wool.

Litla Dimun Shawl

Der Schal ist fertig und sieht recht nett aus/ The scarf is finished and looks quite nice.

Und dann war da noch selbstgefärbte Wolle, die Türkistöne auch selbstgemischt, und daraus wurde ein schönes Tuch, der Litla Dimun Shawl, Design Cheryl Oberle aus dem Buch Folk Shawls. Dieses Buch ist wirklich ein absolutes “Must Have” für Tücherstrickerinnen.

And I still had soem selfdyed wool, I mixed the teal shades myself. It became a beautiful shawl, the Litla Dimun Shawl, design Cheryl Oberle from the book Folk Shawls. This book really is a “must have” for shawl knitters.

Meine Spinnradherde hat sich mal wieder verändert, demnächst mehr dazu, hier ein erstes Foto.

Abschiedswolle – Wool To Say Goodbye

Meine Mutter hat einen schweren Weg beschritten und hat diese Erde gestern morgen mit 89 Jahren kurz nach Mitternacht  friedlich verlassen. Eine Woche blieb sie noch bei uns, nachdem die Ärzte nichts mehr machen konnten. Sie wollte diesen langsamen Weg gehen und Zeit haben, sich von allen zu verabschieden und zu lösen. Ich habe viel Zeit in  ihrer Nähe verbracht, Socken gestrickt (sie hatte immer Angst, dass ich krank bin, wenn ich ohne Strirckzeug irgendwo bin) und irgendwann verlangten meine Nerven nach dem Spinnrad. So nahm ich es denn mit in das Wohnzimmer unseres Elternhauses, wo sie ihre letzten Jahre und auch diese  Woche überwiegend liegend verbrachte, und habe gesponnen. Zwei Wochen hatte sie kaum schlafen können, doch an diesem Tag verfiel sie in einen langen ruhigen Schlaf. Auch allen anwesenden Angehörigen tat die Magie des Spinnrades gut, obwohl es vollkommen lautlos spinnt. So saß ich denn drei Tage lang oft  in einer Ecke des Raumes und haben gesponnen. My mother walked her last way to the other side and deceased peacefully at 89 yesterday morning short after midnight. She stayed with us one more week after the doctors said that they cannot help her any more. She decided to got this last way slowly and to say goodbye to everybody and to leave her life behind slowly. I was close to her a long time, knit socks (she always feared I was ill if I hadn’t my knitting with me) and after a few days my nerves demanded the spinning wheel. So I took it with me to the living room in my parent’s house, where she spent the last years and also this last week mostly in bed. For two weeks she could hardly sleep, but on this day she fell into a calm deep sleep. All present relatives calmed down as well. The magic of the spinning wheel worked, though it works noiseless. So I spun most of the time of her last three days, sitting in a corner of the room. Here is the Goodbye wool.

Meine Mutter hat immer viel gestrickt. Sie brachte mir das Stricken bei, als ich vier Jahre alt war. So richtig fing ich dann aber erst mit 13 Jahren an zu stricken. Mein drittes Strickteil war schon ein Auftrag, eine Jacke im Waffelmusster. So verdiente ich mein erstes Geld mit Stricken. Das hat meine Mutter auch, allerdings mit einer Strickanleitung für eien Schößchenjacke, die sie an den Beyer-Verlag, der später von Burda übernommen wurde, verkaufte.

My mother always knit a lot as well. She taughte me to knit when I was four, but I really started knitting when I was thirteen. My third knitted project was for sale already, a jacket. So I earned my first money with my knitting. The same was with my mother, but she sold a knitting pattern to the Beyer magazine, which was later bought by Burda.

Am letzten Wochenende habe ich einen Irish Diamond Shawl aus sehr dünner Gossamer Wolle angefangen, die mir Cheryl Oberle geschenkt hatte. Er wird ein Erinnerungsstück. Und ihre Anleitungen wie der Irish Diamond Shawl retten alte regionale Muster vor dem Vergessen, somit ist dieses Muster sehr passend.

Last weekend I started to knit an Irish Diamond Shawl with very thin Gossamer wool that Cheryl Oberle gave to me. It will become a piece of remembrance. And her patterns save old knitting traditions from being forgotten, so it suits well to this very special project.

Mein Spinnrad hat noch vorletzte Woche einmal eine Verwandlung gemacht, bei Tom Walther gibt es einen neuen Vario-Spinnkopf. Nun spinnt das Spinnrad wirklich absolut geräuschlos.

My spinning wheel changed a bit the week before, Tom Walther builds a new Vario spinning head. Now the wheel spins absolutely noiseless.

Mohair

Von der Mohairwolle, die ich von Marianne gekauft habe, habe ich schon einiges versponnen

Vor drei Jahren habe ich meiner Mutter einen Muff aus Angorawolle gestrickt. Der ist ständig in Benutzung, denn als Diabetikerin hat sie immer kalte Finger.  Nun habe ich endlich mal ein Foto von dem Teil gemacht.

Three years ago I made a special handwarmer for my mom, knitted from selfspun angora. She has diabetis and therefore always cold fingers. I now finally took a photo of the wooly thing.

Mein Mann und ich hatten darüber diskutiert, ob er die Spinnmaschine, die er vor fünf Jahren gebaut hat, pimpen solle. Meine Idee war, die Elektronik der bisherigen Spinnradmotoren zu nutzen und einen vorhandenen Spinnflügel, z.B. vom Little Gem II, weiterzuverwenden. Er konnte es natürlich nicht lassen, wieder zu basteln, und das kam raus:

Ein kleiner E-Spinner, Maße ohne Spinnflügel und Spule 27 x 20 x 12 cm. Eigener Motor von Maxon.

My husband and I discussed if he should pimp the spinnnig machine he built five years ago. My idea was to use the electronis of the spinning wheel motors and use a flyer that I have by now, eg of my Little Gem II. Of course he had to puzzle around and this is what cam out: A small E-Spinner. Measurements without flyer and bobbins 27 x 20 x 12 centimetres.  It runs by its own Maxon motor.

Mega Spinnkopf – Mega Flyer

Ich hatte mal wieder eine verrückte Idee, und es gibt da einen Spinnradbauer, der dann auch alles mitmacht. Ein großes Lob an  Thomas Walther.

Er hat mir einen Mega-Spinnkopf für das Ella gebaut. Der Spinnkopf ist länger als der normale, und natürlich höher. Die Riesenspule ist innen 19,2 cm lang und hat 18 cm Durchmesser. Die Übersetzungsverhältnisse sind 1:5,5 bis 1:9,5.  Rechnerisch damit viereinhalb mal so viel Volumen wie die normalen Spulen fürs Ella. Das Einzugsloch ist 18 mm groß, der Spinnflügel ist flügelgebremst. Spule und hinteres Spinnflügelachsenlager sind mit Kugellagern ausgestattet.

I had another crazy idea, and there is a spinning wheel manufacturer who really builds my crazy ideas. A big praise to Thomas Walther. He built the Mega Flyer for my Ella spinning wheel. The calculation of the huge bobbin shows that it can take four and a half times as much wool as the normal bobbins, size 19.2 centimetres inside the bobbin, 18 centimetres diametre .The ratios are 1:5.5 to 1:9.5.  The flyer itsself is longer than the ordinary one, and higher of course. The orifice has a diametre of 18 millimetres. The brak system is a flyer brake. Bobbin and the bearing where you put in the flyer shaft are equipped with ball bearings.

Meines Wissens ist das Ella, der Spinnkopf geht auch für das Tom, das einzige Spinnrad weltweit, bei dem man sowohl feines Garn mit normale Spulen als auch Teppichgarn mit Riesenspulen verspinnen kann. Ich bin auf die Idee gekommen, weil so ein Spinnrad mit Riesenspulen wie das Ashford Country Spinner in Europa nicht produziert wird und man bei dem Ella auch gar kein zweiten Spinnrad braucht. Natürlich kann man mit dem neuen Spinnkopf auch Artyarn spinnen. Das Ella Spinnrad ist so stabil, dass es auch mit dem Mega-Spinnkopf ruhig läuft.

To my knowledge the Ella, anfdthe flyer also works on the Tom, is the only spinning wheel worldwide that can spin fine yarns withnormal bobbins and carpet wool as well with the mega bobbins.  I got the idea because there is no spinning wheel with huge bobbins like the Ashford Country Spinner being produced in Europe. And when you own an Ella, you don’t need another wheel. Of course I can spin Artyarn as well on the new flyer. The Ella is so sturdy that it even runs smoothly with a huge flyer.

Henne und Küken – Hen and Chicken

Hier ist eine gestrickfilzte Netbooktasche, die unsere Tochter auch noch zum Geburtstag bekommen hat. Sie ist ja Hühnerfan, und es war noch einiges an Filzwolle übrig. Sie hat sich über die Hühner-Vollausstattung  sehr gefreut. Die Tasche ist eine eigene Idee.

Here is a knitfelted netbook bag that our daughter got for her birthday as well. She likes hes and there was some felting wool left. She was happy to get a total-hen-equipment. The bag is my own idea.

Am letzten Wochenende hatten wir ein Spinntreffen. Göga hat eine neue Motoreinheit für mein Little Gem II gebaut, diesmal mit einem Maxon-Motor. Maxon-Motoren waren im Marsmobil. Und was für Marsmobile gut ist, kann für mein Spinnrad nicht schlecht sein.

Last weekend we had a spinning meeting. DH built another motor unit for my Little Gem II, using a Maxon motor this time. Maxon motors were built into the Mars Car. And things that are good for Mars Cars cannot be bad for my spinning wheel.

Das Ella Spinnrad fährt jetzt auch auf Maxon. Diese Motoren sind unglaublich leise, das Windgeräusch des Spinnflügels ist lauter.

My Ella wheel drives on Maxon as ell now. These motors are incredibly quiet, the wind sound of the fyler is louder than the motor itsself.

Mit elektrischen Antrieb kann man einfach schneller spinnen. Das hier habe ich an einem Nachmittag und Abend gesponnen, 600 Gramm Wolle, nicht allzu dick. Corriedale, holländisches friesisches Milchschaf, Merino.

You can spin just faster with an electric drive. I sun this wool on an afternoon and evening, 600 grams of yarn that is not spun too thick. Corriedale, Dutch Frisian milksheep, Merino.

Die Corriedale bleibt einfädig für ein Tuch. Es sind 300 Gamm und ca. 700 Meter. Eiegnbtlich müsste das ein Frühlingstuch werden, aber ich habe wieder soooo viele Ideen, dass ich nicht weiß, ob ich das in diesem Jahr schaffe.

The Corriedale will be single and become a shawl. The weight is 300 gram and 700 metres. Regarding the colours it should become a spring shawl, but I got sooo many ideas again that I am not sure if I will make it to knit another shawl this spring.
