Mein Mann bastelt gerne, und so hatte er die Idee, mir Spinnflügel mit großem Einzugsloch selber zu bauen. Zunächst für das Ella Spinnrad. Einen ersten Aufbau hatten wir verworfen, aber die Lagerung der Spinnflügelachse in einem Kugellager sollte es schon sein. Hier einige technischen Details: Einzugsloch 20 mm, Spinnflügelarme aus Karbonrohr aus dem Drachenbau 8 mm, selbstgebogener Sliding Hook. „Querholz“ aus Panzerholz. Spinflügelachse wurde von einem netten Bekannten passend gedreht.

My husband likes to do DIY, so he had the idea to build a bulky flyer for me. He started with the Ella wheel. He quit the first idea about the flyer, but the flyer should in any case be running in a ball bearing like the normal flyer. Here are soem technical details: orifice diametre 20 millimetres, flyer „arms“ made from carbon tubes 8 millimetres diametre (usually for kite building), selfbent sliding hook. Hier der neue Spinnflügel mit großem Einzugsloch für das Ashford Joy. Spinnflügelacchse wurde wiederum von dem netten Bekannten gedreht. 20 mm Einzugsloch aus einer Unterlegscheibe, am Spinnflügel befestigt mit Fahrradfelgen, angeschraubt mit M 2,5 Muttern, Querholz aus Hartgewebe, Spinnflügelarme 10 mm Karbonrohr aus dem Drachenbau, Haken selbstgebogen.

Here is the new bulky flyer for my Ashford Joy. The shaft was turned by a nice friendtoo. 20 millimetres orifice, made from a washer. The washer is fixed to the flyer with the „wire rods“ of a bicycle wheel, tightened with 2.5 mm nuts, crossbar from „hard fabric“ (special hard and durable material), flyer arms from 10 mm carbon tubes for kite building, selfbent hooks.

Letzthin wurde ein Möbiusschal „Wave of Colour“, Design Birgit Freyer, fertig. Gestrickt aus selbstgesponnener Merino-Seiden-Mischung.

Heute habe ich Bücher beim Zoll abgeholt, die ich in den USA bei Yarnbarn bestellt hatte. Die Bücher waren unter dem Betrag, für den man Einfuhrumsatzsteuer zahlen muss, alle Papiere waren korrekt ausgefüllt und der Rechnungsbetrag klar ersichtlich. Dennoch musste ich die Bücher beim Zoll abholen. Auf meine Frage nach dem „Warum“ bekam ich die Antwort, dass es viele Menschen geben würde, die falsche Angaben machen. Ich dachte immer, ich lebe in einem Staat, in dem die Unschuldsvermutung gilt. Aber wehe, ein unbescholtener Bürger kommt mal auf die Idee, außerhalb des EU-Auslandes etwas zu bestellen. Sofort gilt man als potentieller Schmuggler und Steuerhinterzieher!!! Tschuldigung, aber ich musste meinem Ärger mal Luft machen, wie ich in meinem eigenen Land behandelt werde.

Die Bücher und Hefte sind natürlich toll.

Today I fetched books fromt he customs which I had ordered at Yarnbarn in the USA. The booky cost less than the amount I would have to pay taxes for, the invoice was clearly visible as well as the fact that the parcel was free of taxes. still I had to fetch my books at the customs office. When I asked there „Why“ they told me that many people have wrong declarations on their parcels.Up to now I thought I live in a state with presumed innocence for an innocent citizen. But beware the innocent citizen has the idea to order something from a coutry outside the EU, you immediately become a potential smuggler and tax dodger!!! Sorry, but I had to vent my anger on the way I am treated in my own country.

The books and magazines are great, of course.

Nun ist Teil 3 des Mystery-Tuchs  „Dome at Night“ auch fertig. Teil 2 wurde stillgelegt, und Teil 3 neu angeschlagen. Ich bin sehr gespannt, wie die endgültige Form des Tuchs aussieht, ich habe noch keine genaue Vorstellung davon.

Clue 3 of the stole „Dome at Night“ is finished. I put clue 2 aside and cast on a new piece for clue 3. I am really curious what the final shape of the shawl will be like, I have no clear idea so far.

Mein Majacraft Little Gem II ist ein wirklich feines Spinnrad. Wirklich gebraucht hätte ich es nicht, aber es ist ja soooo eine Schönheit!!! Die Mängel, die das Spinnrad bei der Ankunft aufwies, sind größtenteils behoben, ich warte jetzt nur noch auf den neuen Wirtel(Nachtrag: Der Wirtel ist schon angekommen, das ist perfekter Service). Die folgenden Fotos zeigen das Spinnrad mit dem Fast Whorl. Es kann immer mal passieren, dass jemand in der Qualitätskontrolle einen schlechten Tag hat und Dinge übersieht. Wichtig ist es dann aber, wie mit den aufgetauchten Fehlern umgegangen wird. Der Service von Majacraft ist nur lobenswert, ich kann die Firma nur empfehlen. So bin ich sicher, jederzeit ein Ersatzteil bekommen zu können, falls das notwendig ist.

My Majacraft Little Gem II is really a gorgeous wheel. I didn’t really need it, but it is soooo beautiful!!! The faults that the wheel had at its arrival are mostly repaired, except that I am waiting for the whorl to arrive (my whorl arrived, yippie, perfect service). The following photos show my spinning wheel with the fast whorl. It can always happen that someone in QA has a bad day and misses faults. But the important thing is how a company deals with the situation when faults occur. The service of Majacraft is remarkable, I can only recomend the company. I am sure I can get a spare part whenever I need one.

Wie man sieht, hat das Spinnrad zwei Antriebsriemen.  Der untere treibt das Schwungrad an, und lenkt die Bewegung der Tritte von der Längs- in die Querachse um. Der obere Treibriemen treibt die Spinnflügelachse an.

As you can see, the spinning wheel has two drivebands. The lower one drives the drivewheel and changes the direction from front to back to sideways. The upper driveband drives the flyer shaft.

Die Trittbretter sind Massivholz, die Holzsorte ist Rimu, eine neuseeländische Baumart. Ich finde dieses Holz wunderschön. Allein die tolle Holzarbearbeitung sind es wert, so ein Spinnrad zu bezitzen, es ist eine Augenweide. Außerdem sieht man die Arrettierung des senkrechten Holms.

The treadles are from massive wood, the wood is Rimu, a kind of tree that grows in New Zealand. I think this Rimu wood just looks marvelous. The perfect woodwork makes it worth to own such a wheel, it is an eye candy. you can also see the locking bolt of the spine.

Das Schwungrad ist aus MDF, man kann hier auch den „Schraubknopf“ sehen, mit dem man en oberen Holm mit Spinnflügeleinheit arrettieren kann.

The flywheel is made from MDF, and you can also see the knob to fix the upper spine part with the flyer.

Die Spinnflügelachse ist fest mit dem Spinnrad verbunden und man sieht die schottische Bremse, die man sehr fein einstellen kann.

The flyer shaft is fixed to the spinning wheel, and you can see the Scottish tension, which can be adjusted accurately.

Und die Rückseite/ Wirtelseite. Die Spinnflügelachse endet am äußeren Ende des Wirtels.

Der Wirtel wird mit einer Inbusschraube fixiert/the whorl is fixed with an Allen hexagonal socket bolt.

Und hier ist der absolute Clou dieses Spinnrads: die Kurbel. Sie funktioniert wie ein Fahrrad,wobei man aber keine Pedale treten muss, sondern Trittbretter, deren Richtung von dem unteren Treibriemen in die Schwungradrichtung umgelenkt wird. Die Kurbel kann nur in einer Richtung ordentlich laufen, von der Spinnerin weg. Wenn man zwirnen will, hebt man den oberen Treibriemen ab und dreht ihn einmal, damit die Spinnflügeleinheit linksrum läuft.

And here is the  highlight of the spinning wheel: the crank shaft. It works like a bicycle, but you don’t have to step pedals, but treadles. The lower driveband changes the direction fo the movement to the one of the drivewheel.The crank shaft can only run properly into one direction, away from the spinner. If you want to twist, lift the upper driveband, turn it once, and the flyer unit runs anticlockwise.

Man benötigt keine speziellen Spinnflügel, um schneller spinnen zu können, es wird nur der Wirtel ausgetauscht. Das macht das Zubehör sehr preiswert. Auch wenn das Spinnrad selber teurer ist als andere, wird es voll ausgestattet billiger als die Konkurrenz. Das sollte man bei der Spinnradwahl bedenken.

Die Standardspulen sind aus Kunststoff, man kann aber auch welche aus Holz bekommen.

Man kann unterschiedliche Spinnflügel für unterschiedliche Garne kaufen.

Die Spinnflügelachse hat metrische Maße, 8 mm. So bekommt man auch in Deutschland Ersatz bzw. kann diesen leicht in einer Metallwerkstatt anfertigen lassen (Gewinde schneiden etc.) Ashford Spinnräder kommen auch aus Neuseeland, sie haben zölligr Maße, die in Deutschland schwer zu beschaffen sind.

You don’t need a special flyer to spin faster, you just change the whorl. That makes the equipment very cheap. Even if this spinning wheel is more expensive than the rest, it will be cheaper than the competitor when fully equipped. You should consider than when choosing a spinning wheel.

The standard bobbins are made from plastic, but you can order wooden bobbins as well.

You can buy different flyers for different kinds of yarn.

The Flyer shaft is metric, 8 millimetres, which makes it easier to get replacement in a metric country. Ashford spinning wheels also come from New Zealand, but they use Imperial Measurement (inches), which makes it hard to get replacement in a metric country.

Wir er nicht schön, unser Bergischer Dom?

Oops, I am already knitting clue 3, so I should really show you clue 2. Doesn’t our Dome/Catherdral look great?

So langsam wird es kälter, der Winter ist nicht mehr weit. Und das Alter schlägt langsam zu. Vor drei Jahren wäre es mir egal gewesen, wie warm oder kalt meine Handgelenke sind, aber sie werden empfindlicher. Ich hasse es, in ein klates Auto einzusteigen und ein kaltes Lenkrad anzufassen. Also habe ich mir Pulswärmer nach eigener Idee gestrickt. Aus selbstgefärbtem und selbstgesponnenem Norddeutschen Kammzug, mit Nadelstärke 4 mm und 65 Gramm schwer.

It is slowly getting colder, winter is ahead. And my body feels that I am getting older. Three years ago I would not have minded if my wirsts were warm or cold, but they get more sensible. I hate to climb into a cold caare and to hold a cold steering wheel. So I knitted a pair of wirstwarmers, it is my own design. Knitted from selfdyed and selfspun Northern German Roving with 4 mm needles, 65 grams of wool.

Das Wetter ist etwas besser, wenn auch noch lange nicht sonnig. Immerhin konnte ich ein etwas besseres Foto von von meinem Shetland Humbug Pullover machen.

The weather is slightly better, though there is no sun yet. There was enough light to take a better photo of my Shetland Humbug sweater.

Heute morgen war Flohmarkt in der Nachbarstadt. Weil das Wetter nicht toll war, war nicht sehr viel los. Dennoch habe ich diese schöne Keramikuhr mit Schäfer und Schafen erstanden.

There was a fleamarket this morning in our neighbouring town. Due to the weather there weren’t many booths and pleople. Still I found this nice ceramics clock with a shepard and sheep on it.

Heute gab es einen ersten Kaffeeklatsch meiner drei Design-Spinnräder

Heute kam das Little Gem II von Majacraft an. Sicherlich, es ist ein schönes und leichtgängiges Spinnrad, aber die erste Freude wurde durch das schluderige Qualitätsmanagement bei Majacraft doch arg getrübt. Dieses Spinnrad hätte eigentlich erst in einem Topzustand die Firma ( wie auf der Homepage angepriesen) verlassen sollen, immerhin ist es ja nicht gerade billig. Glynis Poad selbst hat dieses Spinnrad signiert, das finde ich schon peinlich. Denn der Wirtel hat einen reichlichen Schlag und ist fast nicht zu gebrauchen. Zum Glück habe ich einen Fast Whorl mitbestellt, so kann ich denn wenigstens spinnen. Bei den ersten Spinnversuchen kam ein Gefühl auf, als ob man regelmäßig einen Schlag unter den Fuss bekommt. Mein Mann begab sich sofort auf Fehlersuche, die Treibriemen waren dafür verantwortlich. An den Verbindunsgstellen der Treibriemen waren Hubbel, die nicht nur klackerten, sondern so groß waren, dass sie das Gefühl dieses Schlages auslösten, sobald sie wieder ein Rad berührten. Er hatdie Treibriemen  dann an den Stellen ordentlich abgeschliffen, nun läuft das Rad ruhig. Am Spinnflügel sind Richtung Wirtel Gummistopfen angebracht, die waren zu klein und fielen heraus, sie mussten eingeklebt werden. Würdet ihr nicht auch erwarten, dass so ein Rad fehlerfrei läuft?

Bestellt habe ich das Spinnrad bei Hedgehog Equipment in Wales. Die Kommunikation mit Sarah war gut, und das Spinnrad war um einiges billiger als in Deutschland. Gewiss würde Sarah sich auch um die Mängel kümmern, aber ich werde mich direkt mit Majacraft in Verbindung setzen. Der Service von Royal Mail/Parcelforce war chaotisch, darüber werde ich demnächst berichten.

Today was the first chat of my three special design spinning wheels. My Majacraft Little Gem II arrived this morning. Of course, it is easy to treadle, but my joy was arkened by the fact that the quailty assurance was not done properly by Majacraft. As the spinning wheel is not a really cheap one, I expected Majacraft only sell well checked spinning wheels (as their homepage wants to make us believe). Glynis Poad herself signed this wheel, which I guess is kind of embarrasing. The whorl is totally unbalanced, running excentrically, and you can hardly spin on it. Lucky me, I ordered a fast whorl as well, so I can at least spin on that wheel. When trying to spin the wheel it felt as if someone was hitting the soles of my feet. DH did instant troubleshooting and found out that the drivebands had big bumps at the connections, causing the feeling of being hitted from beneath as soon as the met the wheels again. DH grinded the connections of the drivebands, so the wheel is running smoothly now. There are rubber plugs at the ends of the flyer to the direction of the whorl, which were too small and fell out. DH had to glue them. Wouldn’t you expect such an expensive spinning wheel to run troublefree?

I ordered the spinning wheel at Hedhgehog Equipment in Wales. Communication with Sarah was good, and the spinning wheel was a lot cheaper that in Germany. Of course Sarah would handle my complaint, but I will personally contact Majacraft. The service of Royal Mail/Parcelforce was chaotic, I will report about that soon.

Endlich ist der Pullover aus Shetland Humbug fertig,  gestrickt nach einer modifizierten Anleitung aus LEA200. Eigentlich habe ich nur das Mittelmuster beibehalten, und das ist wohl ein traditionelles irisches Muster. Leider ist das Novemberwetter nicht schön zum Fotografieren.

Ich hatte mit dieser Mohairwolle ein Tuch angestrickt, aber der Faden war mir zu dünn und instabil. Nun habe ich ihn mit blauer Konenwolle verzwirnt (420 m).

I had started a shawl with this wool, but I had the impression it wasn’t strong enough,so I twisted it with thin blue wool (420 metres).

Sarah von Hedgehog Equipment hat mein Spinnrad und eins in die Niederlande gleichzeitig am letzten Mittwoch abgeschickt. Das in den Niederlanden kam am Montag an, meins ist noch irgendwo in England, Parcelforce/Royal Mail scheint Probleme zu haben, mein Spinnrad zu finden. Man hat mir vor Stunden versprochen, innerhalb der nächsten Viertelstunde zurückzurufen, aber der Anruf kommt nicht. Soll sowas Service sein?

I am still waiting for my new spinning wheel impatiently., a Little Gem II. Sarah from Hedgehog Equipment sent my wheel and one to the Netherlands last Wednesday. The one to the Netherlands arrived on Monday, mine must still be in England somewhere, Parcelforce/Royal Mail seems to have problems to find it. I was promised to get a call within aquarter hour many hours ago, but there hasn’t been a call yet. Is that what Royal Mail calls „service“?

Nadja hat diesen wunderbaren KAL gestartet, Dome at Night. Ich habe lange kein Tuch fertig bekommen, aber dieses Muster reizt mich sehr, denn Nadja wurde von unserem Bergischen Dom, dem Altenberger Dom inspiriert. Ich stricke mit sandfarbener Alpakawolle, denn der Dom ist aus Sandstein, und mit verschiedenfarbigen Perlen, weil die Fenster bunt sind.

Nadja started this wonderful KAL, Dome at Night. I haven’t finished a tole for quite a while, but this pattern is really tempting, because Nadja was inspired by our county’s cathedral/dome, the Altenberger Cathedral. I am knitting with sandstone coloured alpaca wool and beads in different colours, because the windows of the cathedral have different colours as well.

Weihnachten rückt näher und die ersten Weihnachtsgeschenke sind fertig. Drei Paar Angorasocken, verzwirnt mit grauer Massam-Wolle, für meine Mutter. Die Socken sind noch viel weicher, als sie auf dem Foto aussehen. Ansonsten bin ich beruflich sehr eingespannt, deshalb habe ich nicht viel zu zeigen.

Christmas is getting closer and the first Christmas presents are finished. Three pairs of angora socks, plied with grey Massam wool, for my mother. The socks are much softer than they look on the photo. I am pretty busy with my job now, so there isn’t much finished that I could show here.

Nadja hat einen neuen KAL gestartet, Dome at Night. Inspiriert hat sie unser Bergischer Dom in Altenberg. Ich habe den ersten Teil angefangen, mit sandsteinfarbenem Alpaka. Das Muster gefällt mir jetzt schon sehr.
