Ashford Joy I

Durch Zufall ist bei mir ein gebrauchtes Ashford Joy I mit Sliding Hook Flyer gelandet. Da ich schon vor einiger Zeit die Vorstellung aufgegeben habe, dass man nur ein Reisespinnrad besitzen sollte, durfte es hier einziehen, obwohl ich schon mal ein Ashford Joy hatte. Spinnräder sind für mich wie Balsam für die Seele. Und meine Seele braucht immer noch viel Balsam. Ich erfreue mich daran, so schöne Exemplare zu besitzen. Außerdem habe ich die Hoffnung noch nicht ganz aufgegeben, dass es mir irgendwann einmal besser gehen wird. Vielleicht bin ich ja in ein paar Jahren so weit, dass ich Spinnkurse geben kann. Oder auch Spezialkurse, in denen man unverbindlich verschiedene Spinnräder testen kann, bevor man sich eins bestellt. Unverbindlich, weil ich mit Sicherheit nicht unter die Spinnradhändler gehen werde. So könnte man dann wirklich ganz in Ruhe Spinnräder testen, ohne in die Richtung eines bestimmten Spinnrads gedrängt zu werden, weil das vielleicht den größten Gewinn erzielt. Nach meiner Erfahrung muss man sich vor so einer Entscheidung erst einmal mindestens eine halbe Stunde auf einem Spinnrad einspinnen, um eine Entscheidung zu treffen. Oder erst einmal das nächste eine halbe Stunde spinnen. Klar, ob sich ein Spinnrad schön spinnt, kann man binnen einer Minute feststellen, aber es braucht länger um herauszufinden, ob es wirklich perfekt zu einem passt. Speziell bei Spinnerinnen, die vielleicht noch nicht so lange spinnen.

An Ashford Joy I with sliding hook flyer found its way to my home by chance. As I gave up the idea of owning just one travelling wheel a while ago, it was allowed to move in though I once owned an Ashford Joy. To me, spinning wheels are like balm for the soul. An my soul still needs a lot of balm. I enjoy owning such nice spinning wheels. Additionally, I did not give up hope yet that I will feel better some day. Maybe I will be fit enough in a few years to offer spinning workshops. And special workshops too, where you can take your time to test the different spinning wheels before ordering one. Without obligation, because I will never become a spinning wheel trader. So spinners could try different spinning wheels unhurriedly and not be advised to buy a speical spinning wheel because that will make the maximum profit for the trader. In my experience it takes at least half an hour of spinning on the wheel before you can decided that it really suits you. Or move on to the next and spin that for half an hour. True, if a spinning wheel spins nicely is a test of just one minute, but it takes more time to find out if it suits you perfectly. Especially for rather newbie spinners.

Majacraft Suzie

Ja, es ist schon wieder ein Spinnrad hier eingezogen. Es ist mein zwölftes Spinnrad, ein Majacraft Suzie. Es ist sooooooooooo schön. Eine traumhafte Holzmaserung und es spinnt sich unglaublich gut. Von Majacraft war ich es bisher gewohnt, dass irgend etwas an den Spinnrädern nicht ganz ok war und neue Teile nachgeliefert werden mussten ist bei diesem Spinnrad nun wirklich alles perfekt. Ich bin wirklich froh, das Suzie Standard bestellt zu haben. Nicht etwa das Pro oder das Alpaca mit einem höheren Schwungradgewicht. Denn dieses Spinnrad ist einfach perfekt für mich. Sozusagen wie angegossen. Es läuft wie von selbst. Technisch super und optisch ein Traum.

Yup, another spinning wheel moved in here. it is my twelveth spinning wheel, a Majacraft Suzie. It is sooooooooooo beautiful. Amazing grain on the wooden parts and it spins absolutely perfect. Up to now my Majacraft wheels were not totally perfect when they came here and I had to ask for spare parts. But not with this spinning wheel. I am really happy that I ordered the Suzie Standard and not the Pro or Alpaca. with more weight on the drive wheel. As this spinning wheel is just perfect for me. Suited for me like a garment. it runs almost by itsself. Technically and optically just a dream.

Bliss E-Spinner

Göga bastelt auch kreativ, allerdings nicht mit Wolle, sondern mit Elektronik. Meistens kommt dann eine Lampe oder ein E-Spinner dabei heraus. Letzthin war es wieder ein E-Spinner, an dem man die Bliss Spulen und Spinnflügel nutzen kann. Die Kontrolleinheit mit Fusspedal ist nicht auf den Fotos. Man kann die Geschwindigkeit vorwählen und das Fusspedal als Ein-Aus Schalter benutzen oder den Schalter vorne rechts zum Ein-Aus Schalten verwenden.

DH als likes to puzzle around creatively, but not with wool, he likes electronics. Mostly, the result is a lamp or an e-spinner. Lately, it was an e-spinner again. The control unit with foot pedal is not in the photos. You can adjust a certain speed and use the foot pedal for on-off or use the switch to the right in front for on-off.

Little Gem II

Gerade eingezogen: ein Majacraft Little Gem II. Ja, ich hatte schon mal eins. Aber dann war ich sozusagen an der Entwicklung des Walther Rades Anna nicht ganz unbeteiligt und es zog eins bei mir ein und damals dachte ich noch, man sollte sich mit einem Reiserad begnügen. Somit zog das Little Gem aus. Im Frühjahr zog dann hier ein defektes Majacraft Rose ein, das viele Reparaturen benötigte, bevor es wieder richtig lief. Und Göga erwähnte immer wieder, wie hübsch doch das Little Gem gewesen war. Außerdem hätte dieses Spinnrad ihn ja zu den E-Spinnern inspiriert. Also habe ich viele Monate mit mir gerungen, und nun ist wieder eins eingezogen. Es spinnt sich wunderbar, das Holz ist wunderschön, ich freue mich sehr darüber. Und ja, es ist Spinnrad Nummer elf. Das klingt ein bisschen viel, aber jedes ist spinnbereit. Andere Menschen mit PTBS schlucken Beruhigunsmittel und andere Psychopharmaka, obwohl bekannt ist, dass es gegen PTBS keine (Schul-)Medizin gibt. Deshalb habe ich solche Mittel von Anfang an abgelehnt, sie verlängern das Leid nur. Mich an schönen Spinnrädern zu erfreuen ist sozusagen mein Weg und ein Teil der Therapie und irgendwann wird es mir hoffentlich wieder besser gehen.

Just moved in: a Majacraft Little Gem II. Yup, I had one before. But then I was involved in developing the Walther Anna and one of them moved in here and at that time I thought you should only have one travelling wheel. So the Little Gem moved out. in spring, a MAjacraft Rose in very bad condition moved in here, it needed several repairs before it spun well again. And DH mantioned again and again how beautiful my Little Gem had been. Furthermore, it had inspired him to built E-Spinners. So I thought about buing another Little Gem for many months and finally one moved in again. it spins very well, the wood is beautiful, I am very happy about it. And well, it is spinning wheel number eleven. That sounds like quite a lot, but each spinning wheel is ready to spin. Other humans with PTSD take traquilizers and other ataractics though it is well known that they don’t help against PTSD. Therefore I refused to take such medicine from the start, they only make you suffer a longer time. To enjoy the sight and the use of spinning wheels is in fact my way and part of my therapy to cope with PTSD, and some day I will hopefully feel better.

Spinnradherde – Flock of Spinning Wheels

Spinnräder sind Herdentiere. Lange Zeit habe ich es geschafft, mit nur zwei Spinnrädern auszukommen, Walther Ella und Anna. Aber dann bietet sich immer mal hier und da die Gelegenheit, die Spinnradherde zu komplettieren. Ein ferner Traum ist es, irgendwann einmal Spinnkurse zu geben, da ich in meine frühere berufliche Tätigkeit auf sehr lange Sicht nicht zurück kann. Und deshalb hatte ich in letzter Zeit etwas genauer geschaut, was für gebrauchte High Tech Spinnräder angeboten werden. Schließlich ist es einfacher, auf einem hochwertigen Spinnrad das Spinnen zu lernen. In den letzten Monaten haben ein Schacht Sidekick, ein Majacraft Rose, ein Walther Tom de Luxe und ein Walther Crazy Ella den Weg in meine Herde gefunden.

Spinning wheels love to live in flocks. I managed to own just two wheels for a long time, Walther Ella and Anna. But you get a chance here and there to get a more complete flock. A distant dream is to do spinning workshops some day, because I will not be able to go back into my old job for a very very long time. and therefore I had a closer look lately on used High Tech spinnign wheels that were for sale. It is much easier to learn spinnning on a very good spinning wheel. During the last few months, the following spinning wheels found their way into my flock. Schacht Sidekick, Majacraft Rose, Walther Tome de Luxe and Walther Crazy Ella.

Louet Victoria S95

Hier ist mein neues Wellness-Spinnrad, das Louet Victoria S95. Wellness-Spinnrad, weil es zum Beispiel Ersatz für Wellnessurlaub sein könnte. denn das wäre nicht so mein Ding. Da ist mir ein weiteres Spinnrad lieber. Ein hartes Jahr mit harter Arbeit geht zu Ende, nach über zwei Jahren mit einer posttraumatischen Belastungsstörung stellt sich nun endlich langsam eine Stabilisierung ein. Das bedeutet zwar, dass der Weg noch lang ist, aber nun ist wenigstens ein gutes Stück des langen Weges geschafft und es wurde Zeit für eine Belohnung. Ich fandd das Louet Victoria S95 schon immer niedlich. Und nun habe ich schon lange auf einem anderen Spinnrad gesponnen, was von Jan Louet entwickelt wurde, dem Bliss von Woolmakers. Da kam mir dieses niedliche Spinnrad als Belohnung in den Sinn. Ich wusste, dass es mit dem S95 anfangs Probleme mit dem Spinnflügel gab. Aber das ist viele Jahre her. Ich kenne unzufriedenen Besitzerinnen von S95 Spinnrädern. wegen vibrierendne Spinnflügeln zum Beispiel. Nur wenn man das an einem gebrauchten Spinnrad hat, könnte da mal jemand davor gelaufen sein, ohne dass man davon weiß. Und schon ist das Ding krumm. Aber irgendwie musste ich dieses Spinnrad trotz aller Bedenken haben, getreu dem Motto: Was nicht ordentlich läuft, das kann man modifizieren. Wir haben hier schon so viele Spinnräder repariert. Und dann kam wie erhofft ein Angebot in Tanjas Adventskalender. Eigentlich noch etwas zu früh für mich, so ganz war ich mit meinen Kaufüberlegungen noch nicht durch. Aber dann habe ich es doch einfach gemacht und es nicht bereut. Das Spinnrad lässt sich sooo fein spinnen. Klar, wie üblich gab es eine Nachlässigkeit bei der Montage im Werk, gleich davon mehr, und ich werde Louet deshalb kontaktieren. Aber mir ist schon klar, warum Louet sich nun auf dieses Spinnrad konzentriert und bei S45 mehr bauen möchte. Das Victoria S95 ist ein ganz tolles Spinnrad, vielseitiger als das S45 und der Käuferkreis ist bei einem Reiserad größer. Und ja, ich weiß, ich habe noch ein Reiserad, das Anna. Aber man kann ja auch zwei Reiseräder haben, einfach so. Einfach, weil es Spaß macht und man eine Belohnung braucht.

And I spun on a spinning wheel dsigned by Jan Louet for quite some time now, the Bliss by Woolmakers. So rewarding myself with this cute spinning wheel came to my mind. I knew that there had been some technical problems with the S95 in the beginning, but that is years ago. I know owners who are not happy with ther S95. For example because of vibrating flyers. But if you own a used spinning wheel with that problem someone might have run into the flyer and you do not know of that. And then the flyer axle can be warped. Somehow I just had to have this spinnign wheel, even with all those objections. true to the motto: an item that does not work properly can be modified. We repared so many spinning wheels here. and then there was a special offer as expected on Tanja’s advent sale. It was a bit early for me, I had not really finished coming to a decision about buying another wheel. But then I just did it and I am happy about it. The spinning wheels spins soooo beautiful. of course, there was some carelessness at the factory when mounting the spinning wheel. I will write more about that below and I will contact Louet about it. But now I can imagine why Louet do not want to build the S45 any more. The Victoria S95 is a gorgeous wheel, it is more versatile than the S45 and there are more buyers who might be interested in a travelling wheel. and true, I know it, I have one traveliing wheel alreaddy,, Anna. But why shouldn’t I have two travelling wheels, just because they are fun and I need a reward.

Diese Schiebehaken sind gewöhnungsbedürftig, aber auch sehr stabil. Die Geschwindigkeiten des S95 sind 1 : 6, 1 : 8,5 und 1 : 13.

 You have to get used to the type of sliding hooks, but they are pretty sturdy. The ratios of the S95 are 1 : 6, 1 : 8,5 and 1 : 13.

Das Montageproblem: wie bei Louet üblich, geht der Doppeltritt über einen Knecht und eine Art Wippe/Holzstange, die zwischen den Tritten montiert ist. Diese wird in der Mitte von einem Metallstab in Position gehalten. Der Metallstab ist mit zwei Schrauben fixiert. Eine davon war nicht fest genug angezogen, eine lose. Dadurch gab es unangenehme Vibrationen in den Füssen beim Treten und das Spinnrad knarrte laut. Dies als Tipp für alle S95 Besitzerinnen, wenn das Spinnrad anfängt, Geräusche zu machen.

The mounting problem: as usual for Luet wheels, the double treadle works with a seesaw/wooden rod that is mounted between the treadles. in the middle, this wooden rod is kept in place by a metal rod. The metal rod is kept in place by two screws. One of the screws was not tightened enough, the other one was loose. That caused unpleasant vibrations in the feet when treadling and the spining wheel creaked loudly. So this is a hint for all S95 owners when their wheel starts making noises.

Zwei Vertiefungen, um den Holm senkrecht und zusammengefaltet zu fixieren. Der schwarze Knopf schnappt in die Vertiefung. Man braucht etwas mehr Kraft oder Schwung, damit er bei senkrechter Position in die Vertiefung schnappt.

Two cavities to keep the post in the upright or folded position. The black button snaps into place. You might need a bit more power to snap it into the upright position.

Die Bremsschnur ist ein textilummanteltes Gummiband, damit lässt sich der Einzug fein einstellen. Manchmal „zieht“ er sich fest und wird zu stark. Wenn man dann mal eben kurz an der linken Seite am Gummiband zieht, ist der Einzug wieder normal.

The break cord is a texitle covered rubber thread that allows fine adjustment of the tension. Sometimes it gets to tight. Then you just draw a bit at the rubber thread on the left side, and the tension is back to normal.

Wolliges Tagebuch – Wooly Diary

Die Anmore Chunky Jacke war schnell fertig. Ich habe sie mit Nadelstärke 10 mm gestrickt. Da ich weiß, dass viele Strickerinnen ungerne selber Anleitungen umrechnen, wird es dazu eine eigene Strickanleitung geben, Weste und Jacke in einer Anleitung. Die Knöpfe werden nicht angenäht, so dass man sie versetzen kann, je nach Lust und Laune.

The Anmore Chunky Jacket was knit pretty fast. I knit with 10 mm (US 15) needles. As I know that many knitters don’t like to calculate garments themselves I will write a special pattern for this one, vest and jacket in one pattern. The buttons are not sewn to th vest, so you can place them whereever you like.

Hier sind die anderen Strickereien meines Urlaubs. Ein CrissCross Eighteen und eine Heede Jacke aus Baumwolle. Beide Anleitungen wird es demnächst geben.

Ein paar neue Spinnereien gibt es auch. Schuffelwolle, das ist die erste Hundewolle, die ich gesponnen habe. Die Haare von Schnuffel waren allerdings überwiegend 1 cm lang oder noch kürzer. Deshalb musste ich sie mit grauer Corriedale mischen und mit einem reinen Corriedale-Faden verzwirnen, damit das Garn überhaupt haltbar ist. Dies sind 69 g und 95 m. Die Katzen waren übrigens wesentlich gelassener bei der Hundewolle, als ich befürchtet hatte. Wahrscheinlich haben sie irgendwie gemerkt, was für ein lieber Hund Schnuffel ist.

There are some new spun yarns as well. Schuffel yarn is the first dog wool I spun. Most of the hair was 1 cm or even shorter. So I had to mix it with grey Corriedale and ply with pure Corriedale so that the thread will not fall apart. These are 69 grams and 95 meters. The cats were much more relaxed than I feared due to the dog wool. Probably they knew somehow that Schnuffel is a very nice dog.

Kürzlich habe ich graue Corriedale gesponnen, und aus den 100 g sind 355 m zweifädiges Garn geworden.

Lately, I dyed some grey Corriedale, and the resulting 2-ply yarn has 100 grams and 355 meters.

Wolliges Tagebuch – Wooly Diary

Ein Blick in unseren Garten: Mitte Mai ist vorbei und wir sind noch mitten im Frühling. Die Magnolie verblüht langsam, der weiße Flieder steht in voller Blüte und der Goldregen fängt an zu blühen.

A glimpse into our garden: the middle of May has passed and we are still in the middle of spring here. The magnolia has  withered, the white lilac is  in full bloom and the laburnum is getting blossoms.

Ansonsten teste ich das  Bliss weiter und bin genauso begeistert wie am Anfang. Hier der erste Strang, 100 g selbstgefärbte Polwarth Wolle zweifädig und 400 m.

Otherwise I am continuing to thest the Bliss and I am just as pleased as I was in the beginning. Here is the first spun yarn, 100 grams selfdyed Polwarth 2-ply and 400 meters.

Meine zweite Wolle auf dem Spinnrad war Shetlandwolle aus einem Fasertausch mit Alison. 346 g zweifädig und 850 m.

My second yarn was Shetland wool from a yarn swap with Alison. 346 grams 2-ply and 850 meters.

Normalerweise benutze ich die gebremste Lazy Kate die mein Mann mir gebaut hat, wenn ich zwirne. Allerdings steht die Lazy Kate beim Bliss so trickreich, dass die Spulen leicht gebremst werden und man damit gut zwirnen kann. Das ist anscheinend so, weil die Stäbe der Lazy Kate zur Seite und etwas nach hinten geneigt sind.

Normally I use the Lazy Kate with brake that DH made for me when I ply yarn. But the Lazy Kate on the Bliss is so tricky that the bobbins are braked slightly and you can ply with them easily. That seems to be because the rods of the Lazy Kate are inclined to the side andslightly  the back.
